Academy of Ancient Music

The Academy of Ancient Music is an English chamber orchestra that specializes in historical performance practice . It was founded in 1973 by the harpsichordist Christopher Hogwood . It was named after a London institution of the same name, founded in 1726.

The ensemble, based at Cambridge University , specializes in compositions from the Baroque , Classical and Early Romantic periods, with original instruments being played. The musicians are conducted from the harpsichord or from the concert master's desk according to historical models . Concertmasters in recent years have been renowned violinists such as Simon Standage , Rachel Podger and Andrew Manze . Manze and oboist Paul Goodwin were appointed deputy ensemble directors in 1996.

Since April 30, 2006 the ensemble has been led by harpsichordist Richard Egarr .
