Andrew Manze
Andrew Manze (born January 14, 1965 in Beckenham / London ) is a British violinist and conductor in the field of historical performance practice .
Life
Andrew Manze studied classical philology at Cambridge , then violin with Simon Standage . In the Netherlands he continued his studies with Lucy van Dael and Marie Leonhardt . In 1986 he was one of the co-founders of the "Ensemble Romanesca" alongside the lutenist Nigel North and the harpsichordist John Toll.
Since the late 1980s he became known as a baroque violinist. In 1988 Ton Koopman appointed him to succeed Monica Huggett as concertmaster in the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra . From 2003 to 2007 he led the leading English baroque orchestra, The English Concert , succeeding the orchestra's founder, Trevor Pinnock . He also played under Simon Standage .
From 2006 to 2014 he was chief conductor of the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra . He often appears as a chamber music partner with harpsichordist Richard Egarr . Numerous CD recordings with the above mentioned musicians for the Harmonia Mundi label mark his path.
Since a concert at the BBC Proms in 2012, he has been regarded as a specialist in the works of Ralph Vaughan Williams , as he knew how to inspire the audience there with the composer's symphonies 4, 5 and 6, performed in one evening. In 2016 he presented a complete recording of all nine Vaughan Williams symphonies with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra . Manze also works with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, which plays on old instruments .
Manze has directed the NDR Radiophilharmonie in Hanover since 2014 . In 2018 he listed Benjamin Britten's indictment against the war, which was regarded as epochal, under the title “War Requiem” - musical understanding between nations.
Manze sees himself, as he explained in an interview with the music critic Stefan Sigrist of the daily newspaper Junge Welt , as one of the “people from the historical music world”. He needs the historical perspective on the music. But - in relation to Mozart and the French Revolution - the composer starts from music. "He is in music, the revolution is in his music too."
Awards
- In March 2011 he received the Rolf Schock Prize in Stockholm in the field of music.
