Aldo Ceccato

Aldo Ceccato (born February 18, 1934 in Milan ) is an Italian conductor.

Ceccato began his musical training at the Verdi Conservatory in his hometown and studied conducting at the University of Music in West Berlin from 1959 to 1962 . He attended summer courses with Sergiu Celibidache several times . At the Accademia Chigiana he received a diploma in piano playing.

First, Ceccato appeared as a pianist. In 1964 he made his conductor's debut with a performance of Mozart's Don Giovanni at the Teatro Nuovo in Milan. This was followed by the debut at La Scala in Milan (1967) and the Covent Garden Opera (1969). From 1970 to 1974 he appeared as a guest conductor with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra . From 1973 to 1977 he was Music Director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra , then until 1983 General Music Director of the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra . From 1985 to 1989 he was chief conductor of the NDR's Radiophilharmonie Hannover , as well as chief conductor and artistic director of the Bergen Symphony Orchestra in Norway (1985–90). He then directed the Radio Symphony Orchestra in Turin, the Spanish National Orchestra in Madrid, the Czech Philharmonic in Brno - with which he performed the oratorio Christ by Franz Liszt for Pope John Paul II - and the Pomeriggi Musicali in Milan.

As a guest conductor, Ceccato has performed with internationally renowned orchestras such as the Boston Symphony Orchestra , the Chicago Symphony Orchestra , the Cleveland Orchestra and the Philadelphia Orchestra , the New York Philharmonic Orchestra , the London Philharmonic Orchestra , the Berlin Philharmonic , the Staatskapelle Berlin and the Staatskapelle Dresden , the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and the NHK Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo.

Ceccato led the conducting class at the State University for Music and Performing Arts in Hamburg and gave master classes in Hanover, Santiago de Compostela, Bergen and Oxford, among others. He was honored with an honorary doctorate from Eastern Michigan University (1976) and Commendatore della Republica Italiana (1981). He is a member of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome (since 1981) and an honorary member of the Dvořák Society in Prague.
