The NHK Symphony Orchestra ( Japanese NHK 交響 楽 団 , NHK Kōkyō Gakudan ) in Tokyo is a Japanese symphony orchestra . It was founded as the New Symphony Orchestra ( 新 交響 楽 団 , Shin Kōkyō Gakudan ) on October 5, 1926, making it Japan's first professional symphony orchestra, founded by Konoe Hidemaro , who also directed it until 1935. The name was later changed to the Japanese Symphony Orchestra and in 1951 to its current name in return for financial support from NHK . In the same year the orchestra was awarded the Asahi Prize . The orchestra is a regular member of the Japanese Orchestra Association .

Vladimir Ashkenazy and Charles Dutoit were the music directors. Wolfgang Sawallisch was honored as "Laureate Conductor".
