Japanese Orchestra Association
The Japanese Orchestra Association ( Japanese 日本 オ ー ケ ス ト ラ 連 盟 , Nihon Ōkesutora Renmei , English "Association of Japanese Symphony Orchestras", AJSO for short) is a professional association founded in July 1990 as a non-profit body in which 33 professional Japanese orchestras (25 regular and eight extraordinary members) are organized. Its headquarters are in the Sumida district of Tokyo.
overview
In 1964 the "Tokyo orchestra group" ( 東京 オ ー ケ ス ト ラ ク ラ ブ , Tōkyō Ōkesutora Kurabu ) was brought into being and four years later it was reorganized as the “Liaison Conference of Japanese Symphony Orchestras” ( 日本 交響 楽 団 連絡 会議 , Nihon Kōkyō Kaigi Kaigi ) Renmei . Following this example, a "Association of Regional Symphony Orchestras" ( 地方 交響 楽 団 連 盟 , Chihō Kōkyō Gakudan Renmei ) was established in 1972 , in which all Japanese orchestras not based in Tokyo were organized. In 1989 it was decided to merge the two existing associations in an all-Japanese orchestral association, which was then officially founded in July 1990 under the current name with 18 members.
Goal setting
The organization pursues the following goals:
- Holding courses and performances on orchestral music (Note: since 2007, March 31st has been designated as Orchestra Day ( オ ー ケ ス ト ラ の 日 ). On this day, all member orchestras perform a concert at the same time. In addition, it takes place every year under the patronage of the Office for Cultural Matters an "Asia Orchestra Week" ( ア ジ ア オ ー ケ ス ト ラ ウ ィ ー ク , short: AOW) instead).
- Dissemination of orchestral music among young people
- Research on the professional direction of orchestras
- Training of orchestral musicians
- International exchange on orchestral music

- Associate members are highlighted in gray, regular members in white.
- The total number of orchestra members of all regular member orchestras was 1765, that of the extraordinary member orchestras 2049 people.
- The total number of concerts organized by the regular member orchestras was 3223 with 3.7 million visitors, while the number of concerts organized by extraordinary member orchestras was 3746 with a total of 4.08 million visitors.
