Sendai Philharmonic Orchestra
The Philharmonic Orchestra Sendai ( Jap. 仙台フィルハーモニー管弦楽団, Sendai Firuhāmonī Kangen Gakudan ) is a professional Japanese symphony orchestra , which in March 1973 as an amateur orchestra under the name "Philharmonic Orchestra Miyagi " ( 宮城フィルハーモニー管弦楽団, Miyagi Firuhāmonī Kangen Gakudan ) was founded.
Two years later, the Miyagi Philharmonic Society was set up to manage the orchestra. In 1978 the orchestra reached the level of a professional orchestra. The arrival of members of the Yamagata Symphony Orchestra and the spin-off of the "New Philharmonic Orchestra Sendai" consolidated the status as a professional orchestra. When the city of Sendai became a city designated by government regulation in 1989 , the name of the orchestra was also changed from Miyagi to Sendai. The orchestra is based in the Aoba district, Sendai.
The orchestra is a regular member of the Japanese Orchestra Association and as such participates in the annual “Orchestra Day”. There are regular concerts at the Sendai Youth and Culture Center (also known as Hitachi Systems Hall ) and participates in the annual Sendai Classical Festival ( 仙台 ク ラ シ ッ ク フ ェ ス テ ィ バ ル ) and in the Sendai International Music Competition ( 仙台 国際 音 楽 コ ン ク ー ル ). The orchestra also plays on the occasion of the annual Sendai Festival of Lights ( Sendai 光 の ペ ー ジ ェ ン ト , Sendai hikari no Pageant ).
