The Symphony Orchestra Yamagata ( Japanese 公益 財 団 法人 山形 交響 楽 団 , Kōeki Zaidan Hōjin Yamagata Kōkyō Gakudan , short: 山 響 , Yamakyō ) is a professional Japanese symphony orchestra that was founded in January 1972.

It is headquartered in the city of Yamagata , Yamagata Prefecture , and is a regular member of the Japanese Orchestra Association . The musical director is Norichika Iimori. The orchestra gives around 30 commissioned and 100 school concerts, mainly in the Tōhoku region, where it was also the first professional orchestra when it was founded. The orchestra also performs more frequently in Tokyo . In 1978 it was awarded the "Saitō-Mokichi-Kulturpreis" ( 齋藤 茂 吉 文化 賞 受 賞 ). In 1979 around a third of the musicians migrated to the Sendai Philharmonic Orchestra, which was founded in 1973 . The so far only performance outside of Japan led the orchestra to the Colorado Music Festival in America in 1991.
