Niklaus Aeschbacher

Niklaus Aeschbacher (born April 30, 1917 in Trogen AR ; † November 30, 1995 in Bern ) was a Swiss conductor , pianist and composer . He was the son of the choirmaster and composer Carl Aeschbacher .

life and work

Niklaus Aeschbacher studied at the Zurich Conservatory and the Berlin School of Music. He then took up positions as a theater conductor in Zittau and Braunschweig . Then he went to the Stadttheater Bern and became chief conductor there in 1949.

As a conductor as well as a pianist, Aeschbacher campaigned for contemporary music. From 1954 to 1956, Aeschbacher was chief conductor of the NHK Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo. From 1959 to 1963 he was general music director in Kiel and from 1964 he held the same position in Detmold .

As a composer he wrote the radio opera Die Roten Schuhe (1943), the ballet Chalanda Mars , various orchestral and chamber music works as well as sonatinas for organ, piano and clarinet and songs.
