Nigel North (born June 5, 1954 in London ) is a British lutenist of historical performance practice .

Live and act

Nigel North began learning the violin at the age of seven. At the age of 10, he received a scholarship for the youth department of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama , where he studied guitar until 1970. At the same time he began to learn to play the lute in self-tuition. From 1971 to 1974 he was in the class of Diana Poulton According to the Royal College of Music , where he also followed courses in classical guitar, violin and viola da gamba .

In the academic year 1974–1975 he devoted himself to historical performance practice and taught at the same time in the lute class. In 1975 he became professor of lute at the Guildhall School, a position he held until 1996. From 1993 to 1999 he was a professor at the Berlin University of the Arts. Since 1999 he has been a professor at the Early Music Institute of Indiana University, Bloomington, USA. From 2005 to 2007 he taught lute at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague .

With the violinist Andrew Manze and the harpsichordist John Toll , he founded the "Ensemble Romanesca" in 1986, which presented numerous recordings that have won prizes. In addition, he worked on more than 100 recordings, be it on the lute or the theorbo .
