John Toll (born June 15, 1952 in Cleveland , Ohio ) is an American multi -Oscar-winning cameraman .

Life

John Toll began his career in documentary film in the early 1970s while he was still in college in Los Angeles . He later worked as a cameraman for commercials and television, before joining the cinema and as a simple cameraman ( camera operator ) in numerous top productions, starting with Martin Ritt's Norma Rae . Other films in this position include Scarface (1983), The Falcon and the Snowman (1985) and Peggy Sue got married (1983).

In 1991 Toll was the first cinematographer for a movie with The Forfeit . The films Legends of Passion and Braveheart followed in 1994 and 1995 . For both films, John Toll received the annual Oscar for Best Cinematography . After the films Jack and The Rainmaker , he directed the 1998 war film The Narrow Ridge under Terrence Malick . For this he was rewarded with his third Oscar nomination. He was then responsible for the cinematography on Almost Famous , Corelli's Mandolin , Last Samurai , Elizabethtown and Seraphim Falls .

From 2000 to 2003 Toll was a member of the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences . He has been married to the Oscar-winning make- up artist Lois Burwell since 1998 .
