action

Jupiter Jones is born in the zodiac sign of Leo , with Jupiter ascending (English: Jupiter ascending). Your aunt is of the opinion that she will achieve great things. When she grew up, however, Jupiter's reality was different: she worked as a cleaning lady. To earn extra money for the family, she agrees to donate eggs at a clinic, which turns out to be an alien ambush. The clinic staff turns out to be aliens who want to kill them. Luckily for her, Caine comes to her aid, a genetically produced ex-military hunter crossed from human and wolf. He brings her to his former superior, Stinger, for her protection. This tells Jupiter about Caine's past and her own royal heritage. She shares exactly the same DNA as the late Queen of the Abrasax family, one of the richest and most powerful families in the universe. One of the property of this family is the earth. Jupiter is a so-called returnee and her genetic disposition makes her the direct successor of the queen. As a result, however, she becomes a competitor of the Abrasax heirs Balem and Titus, which puts her in great danger: the seedy Balem wants to see her dead. Among other things, he received the profitable earth as heir to the throne and does not want to lose it to Jupiter shortly before the "harvest". His brother Titus does not want to give up his inheritance without a fight and sees Jupiter's appearance as an opportunity. He had recruited Caine to track down the new competitor. However, he had not suspected that the hunter would fall in love with Jupiter and thus become her protector. With the help of other collaborators, Titus succeeds in kidnapping Jupiter from Earth into his intergalactic realm, where Caine immediately follows her. Titus plans to persuade Jupiter to have a wedding in order to secure the royal title. The protagonist now learns what the so-called harvest of a planet is all about: The most important commodity in the universe is lifetime, which can be traded in the form of a rejuvenating liquid. This is extracted from humans; production costs innumerable lives. For the purpose of breeding the human resource, planets are specifically populated and become more valuable as the population increases. Allegedly, Titus wants to stop the harvest on his planet in the future, which is why he wants to ensure that the like-minded Jupiter inherits his "property" in the event of his death. Actually, however, he intends to kill her immediately after the wedding, which would give him her royal rights. To convince her of his good character, he gives her the rehabilitation notice for Caine and Stinger. This document would enable the two ex-soldiers to return to their "pack" and give them their wings back. Caine can just prevent the wedding and reveal Titus' true intentions. Shocked, Jupiter begins to realize the responsibility she has taken on by accepting the royal title.

The other brother, Balem, has Jupiter's family kidnapped in the meantime in order to lure Jupiter away from Titus and to him. He offers her the life of her family in exchange for the earth. After a long hesitation, Jupiter rejects his proposal because, as part of the earth's population, they would also be doomed at harvest. A fight ensues in which it turns out that Balem killed his mother, the queen, at the time.

In the meantime, Caine has followed Jupiter to Balem's production facility, which is hidden on Jupiter of all places. When his aircraft crashed, he damaged the outer shell of the site, and toxic and highly explosive gases penetrated. In search of Jupiter, Caine first saves her family members, whom he brings to safety on a spaceship belonging to the Space Police. Balem dies in a fight with Jupiter, who is then rescued from the flaming inferno by Caine at the last second.

After surviving the adventure in space, Jupiter can be seen in her normal everyday life on earth cleaning and having dinner with her family, who, thanks to a brainwashing, cannot remember what happened in space. She then goes on a date with Caine. On the roof of a skyscraper, he asks her if she will ever tell her family that the earth now belongs to her. She says no. On the other hand, she is sure that Caine is the right one for her and that she will always be by her side. Together they fly over the city and enjoy their secret freedom.

background

Grant Hill and siblings Lana Wachowski and Lilly Wachowski were involved in the realization of the film . Filming for the film took place in Spain , the United States, and the United Kingdom .

During the shooting, a construction called "Panocam" was used, on which six cameras were attached next to each other. It was attached to a helicopter and could cover almost 180 °. This allowed the directors to use the overlapping scenes during post-production without the helicopter having to change its flight path.

Natalie Portman was originally scheduled for the lead role, but had to cancel due to scheduling issues.

The cost of producing the film was at least $ 150 million. While it flopped at the American box office, it was significantly more successful in international markets, particularly in China and Russia.

In the review by Spiegel Online it is said that the film "failed terribly". While the technology is convincing, there is a lack of a coherent and interesting story as well as believable characters. "Instead of formulating the socially critical thought games and making them logically comprehensible, both in terms of content as well as technically and spatially, the plot concentrates on bringing their damsel in distress into life-threatening situations again and again and rescuing them, always at the last second, of course."

Christopher Diekhaus saw it similarly when he went to the cinema and wrote: "Although the Matrix creators are reaching for the stars with their thematically ambitious space epic, in the end they get caught up in a somewhat erratic story that produces a surprising number of involuntary laughs."

Dietmar Dath from the FAZ said: “The slides and monologues of the film are […] often outrageous nonsense […] and most beautiful pictures are assembled and torn down so quickly that you don't have time to throw yourself into them - but both Doesn't bother you that much once you've understood: What we're talking about here are these pictures, and that everything goes so quickly is simply an attempt to visualize the principle of 'nimble, surprising exchange of words' from the best pure dialogue films transfer."

epd-Film came to the conclusion: “It is a spectacle that, in its best moments, seems so oblivious, as if children were romping around at the gigantic Hollywood magic box, regardless of losses, without fear of sheer trash. But only in the best moments. ”On the other hand, the“ visual effects, the effort of which is supposed to be responsible for the short-term postponement of the cinema release by six months, and the set design [...] as gigantic as it is detailed ”. Otherwise the "narrative tension is missing, so that all the overloading only tires the viewer."

The NZZ, on the other hand, praises the film as “a powerful reflection on existence and religion”.

The film service said that Jupiter Ascending is a “visually bombastic science fiction film that appears technically quite attractive”, but “succumbs too quickly to its ecstatic, colorful surfaces”, while the “pathetic plot offers nothing more than a musty rescue story” .

At Rotten Tomatoes , Jupiter Ascending was initially only able to convince 25 percent of the critics. In John Green's novel Sleep Well, Her Nasty Thoughts , the film is described as "really stupid and cool at the same time" and "totally silly, but great".
