The Wachowskis are American screenwriters and film directors . They consist of Lana Wachowski (*  June 21, 1965 , born as Laurence, also Larry ) and Lilly Wachowski (*  December 29, 1967 , born as Andrew Paul, also Andy ). They became world-famous through the Matrix film trilogy.

Alternative names for the duo are the self-designation Wachowski Starship as well as before the coming out of both Wachowski brothers and then the Wachowski siblings , meanwhile also Wachowski sisters .

Life

The Wachowski siblings were born in Chicago to a Polish-American family and grew up there with two sisters in the Beverly district. They both left school early to work in show business. Until they were successful there, they had worked as carpenters and drew comics in their spare time .

They showed a great interest in Japanese manga and anime early on and were inspired by the anime Ghost in the Shell to write a script for the film Matrix . The film was later produced by Warner Bros.

Since their breakthrough with the Matrix trilogy, the unpublished scripts from this early period have been coveted by film studios. Trimark acquired the rights to Carnivore , a horror film about an old house whose residents disappear without a trace. The comic film version V for Vendetta was released in 2006. The authors of the original comic were not the Wachowski siblings, but Alan Moore , the draftsman was mainly David Lloyd .

According to their own statements, the siblings like to tell multi-part stories: "Because we grew up with comics and the Tolkien trilogy, one of our interests is to bring multi-part films to cinemas," says Lana. Lilly adds that “Movies are pretty boring and predictable. We want to play a game with expectations ”.

In 2008, the brothers filmed the anime - series Speed Racer as eponymous live action.

From 2009 both worked together with Tom Tykwer on the film adaptation of the book Der Wolkenatlas (English Cloud Atlas ) by David Mitchell . The film Cloud Atlas premiered on September 8, 2012 at the Toronto International Film Festival .

Lana Wachowski

Shortly after the release of Matrix Reloaded , Lana Wachowski began appearing in small public appearances with a feminine appearance. Since March 2010 there is no longer an entry in the IMDb film database under the male first name, but only with the female first name and the comments “also known as: Larry Wachowski”, “also known as: The Wachowski Brothers”. In July 2012, she first publicly described herself as transgender in a promotional video for Cloud Atlas . On the side of the production company, too, she only appears as Lana.

In an interview with the US magazine The New Yorker , the then 49-year-old Lana Wachowski explained how it came about: Even as a child, she never knew whether to line up with the boys or the girls. According to her own statements, she later suffered from anxiety and depression. In 2009, Lana then divorced her then wife.

Since then she has officially lived as Lana; In 2012 the final outing followed and the wedding with another woman. In 2012 Lana Wachowski received the HRC Visibility Award .

Lilly Wachowski

On March 8, 2016, Lilly Wachowski issued a press release about her coming out, in which she stated that she was also transgender . She jokingly noted that the "Wachowski brothers" were now sisters. Lilly Wachowski has been a screenwriter, showrunner and consultant for the Showtime production Work in Progress , which features a transgender main character , since 2019 .
