Matrix Revolutions (original title: The Matrix Revolutions ) is a science fiction film released in November 2003 and the conclusion of the Matrix trilogy, which began with Matrix from 1999 and was continued with Matrix Reloaded in May 2003. As in the previous films, the Wachowski siblings wrote the script and directed. The leading roles remained unchanged with Keanu Reeves , Laurence Fishburne , Carrie-Anne Moss and Hugo Weaving . The film opened in German cinemas on November 5, 2003.

action

The plot follows the end of Matrix Reloaded : Neo is passed out on board the hovercraft Hammer . After taking out several guards, he apparently fell into a coma . However, the brain activities measured by him do not resemble those of a person in a coma, but of a person who has latched onto the matrix. Bane, the only survivor from the previous battle against the machines, is also passed out on board. In Matrix Reloaded , Bane was overwritten by Smith while he was initiating his transfer back from the Matrix, which transferred Smith's "spirit" back into his body instead of Banes.

Because of the brain activity, Morpheus has the Matrix searched for Neo. However, Neo is in a place between the matrix and the machine world. This intermediate world presents itself as a kind of subway station. When Neo wakes up on the platform, he finds a little girl named Sati and her parents waiting for the "Trainman" program and its train. The parents introduce themselves as programs that try to smuggle their daughter into the Matrix. The daughter was created by her parents only out of love, she serves no purpose in the machine world and should be deleted. Neo learns with astonishment that programs can feel and love feelings.

The Trainman is the program that controls the interworld train station. He works on behalf of the Merovingian, who uses this intermediate station as a link to smuggle programs into or out of the matrix. This is what Morpheus and Trinity find out when they go to the oracle . With the new information about Neo's whereabouts, with Seraph's support, they go to a discotheque to go to the Merovingian. The Merovingian demands the oracle's eyes if he is to release Neo from the intermediate world. After a short fight, Trinity manages to threaten the Merovingian with a weapon, so that he gives in and releases Neo.

After his release, Neo visits the oracle where the girl Sati has found refuge. The oracle has a different appearance because its cover was erased and it had to find a new one. Neo receives more information about his assignment and about Smith. Smith is the equivalent of Neo, the result of the equation of the Architect of the Matrix who seeks a balance of forces within the Matrix. Then Neo, Morpheus and Trinity return to the real world. Shortly thereafter, Smith takes the house of the oracle, overwriting Seraph, Sati and the oracle. It becomes clear that after overwriting, Smith can read out the memories of his victims.

Bane has now awakened and is supposed to be the only survivor of the battle to explain why an electromagnetic pulse was triggered too early. He himself claims that he cannot remember anything. Before the ship's doctor can inject him with a remedy to help him remember, he confesses to his sabotage and kills her.

Meanwhile, Niobe's ship, the Logos , is found. Neo explains to the assembled crews that he knows what to do and that he needs a ship to get to the machine city. Niobe leaves the logos to him . Everyone else tries to get back to Zion with the hammer , hoping to be able to intervene in the decisive battle against the guards.

Neo and Trinity want to leave alone with the Logos . During the preparations, Trinity is attacked and overwhelmed by Bane, who has sneaked into the ship unnoticed. When Neo intervenes, a duel breaks out. Neo goes blind when Bane pokes an electrical cord in his face. Despite his lack of eyesight, Neo Smith can perceive Bane's body and overwhelm Bane.

In Zion, meanwhile, the guards have penetrated the dock and the final battle for Zion begins. Niobe steers the hammer , followed by a crowd of guards, through a maintenance tunnel to the dock. Using an electromagnetic pulse, the crew tries to turn off all guards in the dock. All of Zion's electronic defense technology is destroyed. People are forced to retreat to the temple when a new wave of guardians resumes the fight.

In the meantime, Neo and Trinity have arrived on the surface of the earth and can penetrate into the center of the machine city despite strong resistance from the guards. By evasive maneuvers above the clouds, they can shake off attacking guards, but lose control of the ship and crash. Trinity is fatally injured in the impact and dies again in Neo's arms.

Neo enters the machine city to negotiate with the machines. Neo explains that the Smith program has gotten out of hand and poses a threat to the machines. He offers to defeat Smith and in return demands a peace between humans and machines. The machines accept and connect Neo to the Matrix, which has now been completely taken over by Smith.

It comes to the decisive fight that a Smith fights alone, because he is sure that he will win. When Neo is on the ground, Smith speaks of how he foresaw this and, inspired by the oracle, gives one of her sentences: "Everything that has a beginning has an end, Neo". Neo then apparently gives up and lets Smith overwrite him. Since Neo no longer exists, one side of the equation is 0, Smith is also destroyed by Neo's death.

The guards have advanced to the temple of Zion. However, as promised, they break off their attack and withdraw. Morpheus and the others realize that Neo saved them. Immediately afterwards the matrix is restarted. In the end, the oracle and the architect meet in it. The architect asks how long this peace should last, to which the oracle replies: "As long as it goes!"

production

The film was shot parallel to the second part, Matrix Reloaded , and was released in cinemas worldwide on November 5, 2003.

For Matrix Revolutions , the role of oracle had to be reassigned. Gloria Foster , who played the character in the first two parts, died of complications from diabetes in 2001 before the scenes for the third part could be filmed. Mary Alice took over her role in the film as well as in the film sequences of the video game Enter the Matrix .

reception

This section consists only of a cunning collection of quotes from movie reviews. Instead, a summary of the reception of the film should be provided as continuous text, which can also include striking quotations, see also the explanations in the film format .

“Elaborate action spectacle, the initially appealing conception of which is no longer suitable as stable coordinates of a playfully stimulating concept with philosophical echoes. Under clearly recognizable commercial signs, only the outer main threads are spun on in an episodic structure, with the continuation largely getting rid of the intellectual diversity in favor of a bombastic tumult of war and battle. "

"Senseless drivel, stupid firing: With 'Matrix Revolutions' the Wachowski brothers end their once promising science fiction trilogy - and bury their own myth."

- mirror

“But everything that has a beginning has to have an end, Neo, Smith and finally this film. We don't want to see his kind anymore. "

- Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung

"To the extent that I was able to put my questions aside, forget logic, ignore connection errors, and lose myself in the moment, 'Matrix Revolutions' was a terrific action achievement."

- Chicago Sun-Times

"Matrix Revolutions leaves us with something to think about for years."

- Denver Post

The German film and media rating in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating valuable .
