Bruce Spence
Bruce Spence (born September 17, 1945 in Auckland , New Zealand ) is a New Zealand- Australian actor . With his distinctive face and almost two meters tall, he can usually be seen in character or villain roles .
Life
The New Zealand-born character actor has played a number of prominent roles over the course of his career. He was first known as Gyro Captain in Mad Max II (1981) and as Jedediah in Mad Max - Beyond the Thunder Dome (1985).
In 1994 he played the role of Chief in the television series Across the Galaxy and then left to the youth book of the same name by Australian author Robin Klein . In 1998 he starred as the prophetic Elias in the five-time Emmy- nominated remake TV of Moby Dick alongside Patrick Stewart and Henry Thomas .
Other notable roles he played as Trainman in Matrix Revolutions and the mouth of Sauron in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King , both in 2003. His part in Lord of the Rings , however, was canceled due to time constraints, but is found in the Special Extended Edition again . In 2005 he also had a supporting role as an alien in Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith and a brief cameo in Nightmares & Dreamscapes: Based on the Tales of Stephen King in 2006.
Spence was originally intended for the role of Scorpius , the arch villain from the television series Farscape , but the part went to Wayne Pygram . There was also a brief rumor that he would play the Joker in The Dark Knight before Heath Ledger was cast in the role. From 2008 to 2010 he played the magician Zedd at the side of the hero in the series Legend of the Seeker - The Sword of Truth .
Bruce Spence has been married to his wife Jenny since 1973, with whom he has two children. When he's not working in film, he lives with his family on MacMasters Beach, northeast of Sydney .
