action

The Egyptian gods live among the people.

When Horus is about to be crowned the new pharaoh by his father Osiris , Horus' uncle Set appears and kills Osiris . In the ensuing duel, Horus is defeated by Set and robbed of his eyes. The situation is observed by Bek, a young thief, and his girlfriend Zaya.

Set raises himself to be the new pharaoh and enslaves the people. This builds imposing buildings for him, u. a. a huge obelisk . Zaya now lives and works in the house of the builder Urshu, who is responsible for Set's building. Meanwhile, Bek keeps afloat as a thief and always secretly meets with her. They develop the plan to steal the eyes of Horus in order to give them back to him so that he can regain his divine powers. The theft by Bek succeeds, but there is only one of the eyes in the trapped treasury. On their return to Urshu's house, Bek and Zaya are met by Urshu and his guards. The two escape, but Zaya is fatally injured by an arrow.

In the tomb of Osiris Bek finds the completely disaffected blind Horus. Bek can convince him to fight his uncle and gives him one of his eyes back. Horus promises that he will bring Zaya back from the realm of the dead. The two set off to learn from Ra how Set can be defeated. Ra orbits the world on his sun ship , drags the sun over the celestial arc during the day, fights the snake deity Apophis at night and thus ensures the day-night cycle. With the help of the water of life, they want to put out sets of desert fires in order to weaken them. This fire is guarded in a pyramid by a sphinx that puzzles anyone who wants to pass. To solve this riddle, Bek and Horus enlist the help of Thoth , the god of wisdom. You successfully penetrate the pyramid and can solve the puzzle; But before the fire can be extinguished, Set appears and kills Thoth. Set visits his father Ra on his sun ship and kills him in a duel with his own sun spear.

Set, who has meanwhile also cut off the wings of his former wife Nephthys , has these wings, Thoth's brain, the heart of Osiris and the second eye of Horus inserted and thus, together with Ras Speer, becomes a kind of super god who has all abilities of the defeated gods. Set lets Apophis loose on earth.

There is a duel on top of the huge obelisk between Set and Horus. Horus can defeat Set, although he has apparently not yet regained his full powers due to the one missing eye. But through a statement by Ras he knew that he didn't need the second eye. In the course of this duel, Bek is fatally injured. Ra is revived by Horus, who can drive Apophis back into the night. When Horus puts Bek at Zaya's side, Ra appears and lets them both rise from the dead. Horus is now crowned Pharaoh, Bek is his new deputy.

reception

Reviews

The film largely failed the critics. The Rotten Tomatoes platform recorded (as of June 21, 2018) only 15% positive out of 177 evaluated reviews. In his criticism, Andreas Staben von Filmstarts criticized the fact that the mythology-history mish-mash would combine all the ingredients into a tongue-in-cheek 3D spectacle with B-movie charm, but the whole thing was always buried under uninspired action scenes and at best mediocre computer effects would. The film magazine Cinema noted that the long fantasy thunderstorm was overwhelmed by the completely out of hand special effects. Bernd Rebhandl, on the other hand, wrote on Faz.net that the wild visions of Alex Proyas would also make a very concrete, politically correct sense and that in a certain way this was entirely successful and also made a fun film.

Grossing results

The film was also not convincing financially. With an estimated budget of 140 million dollars , the film (as of June 21, 2018) was only about 150.7 million US dollars import.
