Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (born July 27, 1970 in Rudkøbing ) is a Danish actor .

life and career

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is the son of Hanne Søborg Coster and Jørgen Oscar Fritzer Waldau. He grew up with his mother and two older sisters in Tybjerg, south of Copenhagen . His alcoholic father usually lived separately from the family.

Coster-Waldau completed his training as an actor in 1993 at the Statens Teaterskole . The following year he became a star in his home country by starring in the film Nightwatch . The thriller, which became a surprise success in Denmark, was filmed again in 1997 in Hollywood by Ole Bornedal with Ewan McGregor in the lead role. Coster-Waldau was able to build on the success of Nightwatch with Simon Staho's Vild spor and Jesper W. Nielsen's drama The Bouncer , for each of which he received a nomination for the renowned Danish film award Robert for best leading actor. Since 1998 Coster-Waldau has been married to the Greenlandic artist Nukâka Motzfeldt , daughter of the politician Josef Motzfeldt , with whom he has two daughters.

Coster-Waldau became known to an international audience in 2001 with the role of Master Sergeant Gary Ivan Gordon in Black Hawk Down , a film adaptation of the Battle of Mogadishu during the US mission in Somalia. He made an effort to gain a foothold in the United States by shooting an application video in Copenhagen and submitting it. He took on his first leading role in an English-language film for Henker in 2005 . He was first involved in the production of the film Himmerland (2006), in which he also played the leading role. He had another leading role in 2008 in the short-lived US series New Amsterdam .

In the HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones , Coster-Waldau got the role of Jaime Lannister . Regarding this character, he said: “What is there not to like about Jaime? As an actor, I couldn't have asked for a better role. "

In 2013 Coster-Waldau played the lead role alongside Jessica Chastain in the Canadian horror film Mama . In the same year he was seen as a weapons expert Sykes in the science fiction film Oblivion with Tom Cruise , Morgan Freeman and Melissa Leo . Both films reached the top of the box office in both the USA and Germany .
