action

In the wake of the 2008 financial crisis , a businessman named Jeffrey kills his wife and business partners. With his two daughters, Victoria , who was three at the time, and her one-year-old sister Lilly , he flees into a forest, where he causes a traffic accident, which all three survive. You then go to a secluded hut.

The desperate Jeffrey lights a fire in the fireplace, then he wants to shoot his children first, then himself. When he tries to pull the trigger, a shadowy figure lifts him into the air and strangles him with his own tie . Victoria, who had turned around, cannot see anything because her father had previously removed her glasses, which were damaged in the accident. While the children crouch in front of the fire in the fireplace, frightened, the shadowy figure throws them a ripe cherry.

Five years later, they are found in a wild state by two men whom their uncle Lucas , Jeffrey's twin brother, had asked to look for them years ago. The girls are taken to a welfare clinic run by Dr. Gerald Dreyfuss is headed. Dreyfuss assures Lucas and his partner Annabel that they will support their application for custody of the girls' great aunt, Jean Podolski . He is fascinated by the pictures the girls have made of a mysterious character named "Mama". The two talk and play with this creature (invisible to Dr. Dreyfuss).

One night, during an intimate moment between Lucas and Annabel, Annabel is frightened by a shadowy figure in the door frame of the bedroom. When Lucas tries to get to the bottom of this incident, he is attacked by "Mama", falls down the stairs and falls into a comatose state. Annabel, who is not related to the girls, now has to look after them on her own, while "Mama" continues her visits. As for the behavior of the two girls, Annabel can make progress with Victoria, but Lilly remains hostile to her. Alerted by nightmares and a warning about “Mom's jealousy”, Annabel asks Dr. Dreyfuss for further investigation.

Dr. Dreyfus initially suspects that “Mama” could be Victoria's alter ego , an invention of the girl because she had to take on the role of mother in the lonely years. However, his research backs up Victoria's story that mom is a troubled mother who was once separated from her child. It brings to light the story of Edith Brennan , a psychiatric patient who lived in the 19th century. Dreyfuss finds a box with the remains of an infant in a forensic warehouse and has his first encounter with mom during a session with Victoria.

Annabel meanwhile has a nightmare about Mama's past: Mama, read: Edith Brennan, was supposed to be placed in a psychiatric hospital because of a mental illness, the baby was taken away from her by nuns . Edith was able to free herself, however, she stabbed the mother superior and ran away with her child. On her flight she came to a high cliff. Edith jumped from the cliff in despair. During the fall, the child was struck dead by impact with a branch, while the woman fell into the water and drowned. Annabel concludes that mom never knew what happened to her child and has been looking for her ever since. She obviously sees a substitute in Victoria and Lilly.

Lucas regains consciousness after having a disturbing vision of his dead brother Jeffrey, who tells him to go to the cabin in the woods. Meanwhile, Annabel and the girls are visited by Jean. She tries to report Annabel for child abuse after discovering some wounds on the girls. While Victoria trusts and gets closer to Annabel, Lilly still prefers to be around "Mama".

Dr. Dreyfuss visits the forest hut to prove the existence of "Mama". While trying to photograph her, he is killed by her. After Annabel realizes he is missing, she steals the girls 'files from Dreyfuss' office. She comes to the conclusion that Edith and "Mama" are the same person. Meanwhile, Lucas leaves the hospital to find the hut. After Victoria has shown her trust in Annabel, Annabel and the girls are attacked by the jealous mom. Meanwhile, Aunt Jean enters the house to document the alleged child abuse. "Mama" takes over Aunt Jean's body, overpowers Annabel and escapes with the girls. When Annabel regains consciousness, she grabs the box with the remains of mom's child and goes into the forest, where she meets Lucas.

The couple spots the girls on a nearby cliff, where mom (who has since killed Jean) is preparing to relive her suicide and pull Victoria and Lilly down with her. When Lucas tries to intervene, he is knocked unconscious by Mama's supernatural powers.

Annabel offers mom the remains of her birth child and mom's troubled soul goes through a peaceful transformation, whereby she finds her way back to her human form. At that moment, however, Lilly calls for her, and Mama turns into her vicious form again and attacks. She throws the remains of her biological child over the cliff. After a desperate fight, Annabel manages to cling to Victoria and hold onto her. When Mama attacks Annabel again, Victoria intervenes and confesses to Mama that she loves Annabel more.

Then Victoria says goodbye to Lilly. Mama wraps herself and Lilly in a kind of cocoon and jumps off the cliff. Here she comes across the same branch that killed her child in the 19th century. When it hits the ground, Mama and Lilly turn into a swarm of moths. While Victoria hugs Annabel and Lucas, a blue and black butterfly lands on her hand, in which she recognizes Lilly.
