Virtuality - Ghost in the Machine is a science fiction - television film , written by Ronald D. Moore and Michael Taylor . It was broadcast on June 26, 2009 by the US broadcaster network Fox .

The film directed by Peter Berg was originally produced as a pilot episode of a television series of the same name, but the series was not commissioned by Fox. In the same year the film was also released on DVD .

action

The twelve crew members of the first interstellar spaceship, the Phaeton , are on a journey to another solar system. In order to better survive the long journey time, the crew has technology available with which they can create virtual realities in order to withdraw into them.

The experiences of the crew are recorded for the reality television show The Edge of Never and beamed to earth. The astronauts are under camera surveillance almost around the clock and give regular reports to the audience.

dedication

In the credits, the film is dedicated to NBC executive Nora O'Brien, who died in May 2009 .

Charisma

The television film was broadcast in the USA on Friday, June 26th, 2009 at 8:00 pm on the Fox network, the time slot that is unofficially often referred to as the "death slot". Only 1.8 million viewers tuned in, which resulted in an audience rate of 0.5% (rating) or 2% (share) (see Nielsen ratings ) in the adult target group of 18–49 year olds. Fox was thus behind the broadcasters ABC , NBC and CBS with its audience numbers .
