Wendy Ann Melvoin (born January 26, 1964 , Los Angeles , California ) is an American guitarist and singer-songwriter . She is known, among other things, for her collaboration with the musician Prince and as part of the duo Wendy and Lisa. In 1985 she was awarded a Grammy .

Life

Wendy Melvoin and her twin sister Susannah Melvoin were born on January 26, 1964. Her father Mike Melvoin (1937–2012) was a jazz pianist and former president of NARAS , her mother Constance Lula Ives (born December 31, 1936 - May 7, 2020) was not in the music business. Melvoin's older brother Jonathan Melvoin (1961–1996) was, among other things, keyboardist in the band The Smashing Pumpkins .

Career

A friend of Wendy Melvoin's father was session musician Gary Coleman. His daughter Lisa Coleman , a musician in Prince's band since 1980, introduced her to Prince in 1982. Wendy Melvoin played a session in his hotel room, whereupon Prince brought her as guitarist for his 1999 album project . Melvoin and Coleman became members of the band Prince and The Revolution, founded in 1983 .

After their breakup in 1986, Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman formed a joint funk and rock band called Wendy and Lisa, with whom they wrote the score for the two television series Crossing Jordan - Pathologist with Profile (2001-2007) and Heroes (2006-2010) composed.

Melvoin has also worked as a producer for artists such as Lisa Germano , Nina Gordon , Sheryl Crow , Liz Phair , Scritti Politti , Neil Finn , KD Lang , Nerina Pallot and Eric Clapton .

In 2018 she was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.
