action

Louanne Johnson joins East Palo Alto Inner-City High School as an ex-Marine. Your students all belong to the lower class. Many of them are gang members and deal in drugs . Because of her petite figure and pale skin color, she is mockingly called "white cheek" by the students.

In order to earn their respect, she wears a leather jacket and teaches her students karate . She uses texts by Bob Dylan to teach poetry to the youth and rewards them with a trip to an amusement park, candy bars, and a competition to find a poem by Dylan Thomas that matches a poem by Bob Dylan . The students trust their teacher more and more and develop hope for themselves and their social situation.

But the director is very dissatisfied with Louanne's teaching methods and threatens her with a dismissal, which is ignored by her.

One day one of the students, Emilio, is threatened by an ex-inmate who wants Emilio's girlfriend to himself. Emilio regards him with derision. The ex-prisoner announces that he wants to kill Emilio. Louanne tries to prevent this by taking Emilio home with her and telling him that violence is not the solution and that he should report the incident. The next morning Emilio actually wants to report the matter, but is turned down by the director Grandey because " he did not knock on the door ". That day Emilio is shot. Louanne wants to leave the school, but is held up by the students who have taken her into her heart.

Reviews

“Contemplative youth entertainment with a social coating that barely honors their alleged commitment and saves conflicts. Routinely staged, but far too beautiful to be credible. "

The German film and media rating awarded the film the rating “particularly valuable” .
