The Dolcetto di Ovada ( DOC ) (or simply Ovada ) and the Dolcetto di Ovada Superiore ( DOCG ) are Italian red wines from the Dolcetto grape and a wine-growing area in the province of Alessandria , Piedmont .

The "Dolcetto di Ovada" had a controlled designation of origin ( DOC ) since 1972 . The "Dolcetto di Ovada Superiore" has enjoyed the status of a controlled and guaranteed designation of origin ( DOCG ) since 2008 . This was updated on March 7, 2014.

The Ovadese area includes the municipalities of Ovada , Belforte Monferrato , Bosio , Capriata d'Orba , Carpeneto , Casaleggio Boiro , Cassinelle , Castelletto d'Orba , Cremolino , Lerma , Molare , Montaldeo , Montaldo Bormida , Mornese , Morsasco , Parodi Ligure , Prasco , Rocca Grimalda , San Cristoforo , Silvano d'Orba , Tagliolo Monferrato and Trisobbio .

In 2016, 16,080 hectoliters of "Dolcetto di Ovada" (DOC) were produced on 287 hectares of vineyards . 1,675 hectoliters of the “Dolcetto di Ovada Superiore” (DOCG) were produced.

The "Dolcetto di Ovada" and the "Dolcetto di Ovada Superiore" are made from 100% Dolcetto grapes . If the "Dolcetto di Ovada Superiore" has been stored for at least 24 months, it can be labeled "Riserva".
