Ghemme is a dry red wine from the northern Italian region of Piedmont , which was granted DOCG status in 1969 . It is named after the municipality of Ghemme in the province of Novara .

The production area belongs to a historically significant wine region, which is located at the last foothills of the Alps on both sides of the Sesia River in the provinces of Vercelli and Novara . There are ten DOP wine zones, represented by the “Consorzio Tutela Nebbioli - Alto Piemonte” consortium: Gattinara DOCG , Ghemme, Boca DOC , Bramaterra DOC , Colline Novaresi DOC , Coste della Sesia , Fara DOC , Lessona DOC , Sizzano DOC , Valli Ossolane DOC . The defining grape variety for the wines of these areas is the Nebbiolo .

Most of the wine (85–100%) is made from the Nebbiolo grape variety (also called "Spanna" in the region) with the possible blending partners Vespolina and / or Uva Rara . The prescribed maturation period for Ghemme DOCG is 34 months (of which 18 in wooden barrels), with the addition of "Riserva" 46 months (of these 24 in wooden barrels).
