Ghemme ( Piedmontese Ghem ) is a municipality with 3467 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the Italian province of Novara (NO), Piedmont region . The wine of the same name is also grown there.
geography
The municipality is located on the Sesia River and consists of the districts of Strona and Ghemme. The neighboring municipalities are Carpignano Sesia , Cavaglio d'Agogna , Fontaneto d'Agogna , Gattinara , Lenta , Romagnano Sesia and Sizzano .
history
Ghemme was first mentioned in writing in a document in the year 1000. In the 15th century, various families from Novara and Milan owned houses and properties in Ghemme. In the course of history the place was fiefdom of different families, among others the Tettoni (16th - 17th century), the Homodei (17th century) and the Modegnani (18th century).
Attractions
The parish church of Madonna Assunta was built on the site of an earlier church from 1666. The facade was erected from 1720 and the church was consecrated in 1731. The main altar dates from 1763. The tower was built in 1664–1665 and given a new top in 1879–1884.
For the local patroness, the Blessed Panacea , a sanctuary was built by the architect Alessandro Antonelli from Ghemme (Scurolo della Beata Panacea) , in which her bones are kept.
traffic
The A 26 autostrada runs to the west and north-west of the village , to which it is connected via the Romagnano Sesia-Ghemme junction . Novara is about 25 km to the southwest and is connected to the town by Strada statale 299. Ghemme also has a station on the Novara - Varallo Sesia railway line .
Personalities
- Alessandro Antonelli (1798–1888), one of the most important architects of the 19th century, who also planned the Mole Antonelliana in Turin , was born in Ghemme.
