Alessandro Antonelli
Alessandro Antonelli (born July 14, 1798 in Ghemme , Italy ; † October 18, 1888 in Turin ) was an Italian architect and is considered an important architect of the 19th century .
Life
He finished his architecture studies in Turin in 1824 with an engineering exam. He then went on to study geometry in Rome in 1828 . In 1831 he was commissioned by the city of Novara with the general planning for the renovation of the city center. In 1836 Antonelli took over a professorship at the Art Academy in Turin.
He had been working on his first major work, the completion of the church of San Gaudenzio in Novara , which had already begun in the 16th century. Antonelli was able to complete the construction in 1878 with the completion of the high domed tower. In 1854 he directed the renovation of the Novara Cathedral .
Urban planning projects for Novara and Ferrara followed in 1857 and 1862 .
The highlight of his work is the Mole Antonelliana in Turin, named after him . In 1861 he won the competition that the Jewish community of Turin had announced for the construction of their synagogue . When, contrary to all agreements, he had the building carried out in ever-increasing dimensions, the Jewish community laid down the owner.
As with San Gaudenzio in Novara, Antonelli also refused to use modern construction techniques such as reinforced concrete when building the pier . Due to his unusual constructive talent, he also achieved enormous dimensions with conventional wall technology ; the Mole Antonelliana is still the tallest brick building in the world.
In terms of style, Antonelli was originally at home in classicism , but turned to neo-baroque under the impression of the Turin buildings by the baroque architect Guarino Guarini (1624–1683) .
In 1888, the year the pier was completed, Antonelli died at the age of 90 in Turin.
