Abbazia dei Santi Nazario e Celso

Abbazia di San Nazario e Celso

The monastery (Italian: Abbazia dei Santi Nazario e Celso ) was founded by Bishop Ruperto from Biandrate in 1040. In 1223, during the wars between Vercelli and Novara, it was burned down, but rebuilt at the behest of Emperor Frederick II (the Novares bishops were notoriously loyal to the Empire). 1429–1450 the buildings were partially redesigned in Gothic style. There has been a thorough restoration since 1960.

The rectangular defensive system of the monastery behind moats and a gate tower with four round corner towers, one of which has been developed as a keep, are almost completely preserved from the original building. The complex is dominated by a mighty Romanesque campanile, which still belongs to the time it was built around 1040 and, with its loopholes-like windows, looks extremely warlike.

The right and left aisles of the basilica remain from the Romanesque foundation building of the monastery church, while the central nave has disappeared up to the 4th yoke. The west wall dates from around 1450 and shows clear terracotta decoration.

The cloister was built between 1480 and 1500. The fresco cycle shows scenes from the life of St. Benedict. The style is very narrative, with many individualized individual figures, landscapes, castles and interiors. Of particular note is a fresco of an armed knight in an illusionistic architectural frame, created around 1510.
