Orta San Giulio ( Piedmontese and Lombard Òrta ) is an Italian municipality with 1341 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Novara (NO) in the Piedmont region , is a member of the association I borghi più belli d'Italia (The most beautiful places Italy) and is the holder of the Bandiera Arancione of the TCI .

geography

Orta San Giulio is located on the east bank of Lake Orta ( Lago d'Orta or Cusio ) on a headland protruding into the lake and is an important tourist destination with a picturesque old town. Most of the town houses date from the Renaissance and Baroque periods . The island of Isola San Giulio and the districts of Corconio, Imolo and Legro also belong to the municipality .

Attractions

  • The Piazza Mario Motta is the main square of the place, where the boats to Isola San Giulio drop off and dock. The weekly market has been held here every Wednesday since 1228. The former town hall from 1582, now the Palazotto della Comunitá, is located on the northern narrow side .
  • From the east side of the square, the Salita della Motta alley leads up to the church of Santa Maria Assunta . It was first built in 1485 and rebuilt in the second half of the 18th century.
  • The Oratorio di San Rocco is another church worth seeing in the village with baroque furnishings .
  • The approximately 90 meters higher Sacro Monte d'Orta rises above the village , on which a calvary with 20 chapels in honor of St. Francis of Assisi and the Chiesa San Nicolao Francesco are located. The Sacro Monte d'Orta is part of the UNESCO World Heritage of the seven Sacri Monti in Trentino .
  • The Villa Crespi falls by its Oriental-style architecture and its location at the city limits every passerby immediately. The building was built in 1879 as a private residence by Cristoforo Benigno Crespi , who had made it into considerable wealth in the cotton industry during the early days of Italy. Today it's a hotel.
  • A hike along the lakeshore around the peninsula is scenic (duration: about 1 hour)
  • The Legro district is known as the "painted village"; The walls of many houses are adorned with painted scenes from films that were shot in the area of ​​Lake Orta.
