The Isola San Giulio is an island in Lake Orta in Piedmont , which the municipality of Orta San Giulio belongs.
history
Its name goes back to a miraculous Greek named Julius, who is said to have freed the island from dragons and snakes in the 4th century. The silhouette of the island is dominated by the mighty Mater Ecclesiae Abbey (a former seminary) and the Basilica di San Giulio , which the Bishop of Novara had built in the 9th century.
Attractions
The center of attraction in the basilica is a magnificent Romanesque pulpit made of dark, blue-green serpentinite, which is decorated with large reliefs of fighting mythical animals, eagles and figures of saints. In the crypt , the bones of San Giulio with a gold mask are said to rest in a glass coffin.
