Faas Wilkes (born October 13, 1923 in Rotterdam as Servaas Wilkes ; † August 15, 2006 ibid) was a Dutch football player .
Wilkes played 38 times as a striker for Elftal and scored 35 goals. Together with Abe Lenstra and Kees Rijvers , he formed the “golden inner storm” of the 1950s. He played his first game as a national player on March 10, 1946 against Luxembourg . The Netherlands won this game 6-2. With the Dutch selection, he also took part in the 1948 Olympic Games in London .
Wilkes played for Xerxes in Rotterdam before moving to Inter Milan in 1949 . For Inter, he played 95 games and scored 47 goals. He became one of the most respected Dutch football players. In 1952 he left Inter Milan and then played at AC Turin as well as in Valencia , Venlo , Levante and Sittard before ending his playing career with his hometown club Xerxes.
Faas Wilkes was the second Dutchman to play abroad after Bep Bakhuys . From 1959 to 1998, when he was replaced by Dennis Bergkamp , Wilkes was the record scorer for his country's national team; and that although he did not play any international matches from 1949 to 1955, because professional football was not yet permitted in the Netherlands at that time and professional players were not called up to the national team.
Faas Wilkes died of cardiac arrest on August 15, 2006 at the age of 82 .
