Fortuna Sittard is a football club in the Dutch city of Sittard , Limburg province . The club has been playing in the Dutch Eredivisie again after 16 years since 2018 . Fortuna Sittard plays its games in the Fortuna Sittard Stadium with a capacity of 12,500 .

history

The association is an association of the two former clubs Fortuna 54 Geleen and Sittardia . Due to financial difficulties, the two clubs merged in 1968. Fortuna 54 was a relatively successful club until then, having won the KNVB Cup in the 1956/1957 season . Sittardia, however, often fought against relegation. In 1964, before the two clubs merged, another success followed in the KNVB Cup.

Success and failure were balanced at Fortuna, but Fortuna was a fixture in the honor division in the 1980s and 90s . After the first promotion to the first division in 1982, the Fortunes, apart from a two-year second division time from 1993, could hold for 20 years in the Eredivisie. In the 1984/85 season Sittard reached the quarter-finals of the European Cup Winners' Cup . The last two secured seasons come under the aegis of coach Bert van Marwijk . When he left the club at the end of the 1999/2000 season to move to Feyenoord Rotterdam , the club's success story ended. While the class could still be held in the relegation games in the following season , Fortuna rose to the First Division in 2002 . Due to financial mismanagement, the association was on the verge of bankruptcy. Thanks to a donation from Fortuna fans who had won the Dutch lottery, the worst could be prevented. A return to the Eredivisie did not succeed until the 2017/18 season. On April 28, 2018, Fortuna Sittard was promoted to the Eredivisie early with a 1-0 win against Jong PSV Eindhoven .

At the beginning of the 2009/10 season, Roda Kerkrade and Fortuna Sittard should merge; the new name of the club should be "Sporting Limburg". The games of the first team should be played in Kerkrade, the stadium in Sittard should serve to promote young talent. In the discussion about the formation of FC Limburg , MVV Maastricht and VVV Venlo were also mentioned as possible further merger partners. The merger should take place on April 2, 2009. After the provincial government had canceled the funds that had already been promised, it was decided in a nightly meeting on April 9, 2009 not to carry out the merger.

Fortuna Sittard could therefore not solve the financial problems for the time being and struggled to assert themselves in the second highest Dutch league. For this reason, too, the club achieved nine times in a row between 2002/03 and 2010/11 no better placement than 15th place in the Eerste Divisie . After an intermediate high with three solid seasons between 2011/12 and 2013/14, Sittard found himself back in the lower half of the table in the following seasons.

In the summer of 2016, the Turkish businessman Özgür Işıtan Gün joined Fortuna Sittard. Under Özgür Işıtan Gün, some Turkish players were also temporarily signed, such as Okan Kurt , Emrah Başsan , Ufukcan Engin or Aykut Özer . After a difficult first season, Sittard improved significantly in 2017/18 and surprisingly made it to the Eredivisie in the second season under Gün .
