Fernando Jacob Hubertina Hendrika Ricksen (born July 20, 1976 in Heerlen , † September 18, 2019 in Airdrie , Scotland ) was a Dutch football player .

Career

Fernando Ricksen began his professional career in 1993 at Fortuna Sittard . After 94 games and seven goals, he left the Sittarder in 1997 and moved to AZ Alkmaar . In 1998 he rose with the club in the Eredivisie . In 2000 he moved to the Scottish top club Glasgow Rangers . With the Rangers he won the Scottish Premier League in 2000, 2003 and 2005 and the Scottish FA Cup in 2000, 2002 and 2003 . The Scottish League Cup was brought to Glasgow in 2002, 2003 and 2005 (with Ricksen as captain) . In 2006 Ricksen left the Scots for Russia to Zenit St. Petersburg , with whom he became champions in 2007 and won the UEFA Cup in the 2007/08 season . In August 2009 he terminated his contract. After he had not found a new club, he temporarily ended his career.

On December 2, 2010, he revised the decision and joined his hometown club Fortuna Sittard.

For the Dutch national team Ricksen ran a total of 12 times between 2000 and 2003; He didn't score goals.

In October 2013, Ricksen announced that he had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He died in September 2019 in a hospice in Airdrie, Scotland. He left behind his wife, with whom he had been in a relationship since 2007 and married since 2014, and their daughter.
