history
The settlement of what is now Airdrie can be dated back to 577 AD, when the Battle of Arderyth took place between Rydderych (The Bountiful) , king of Strathclyde and Aeddam (The Perfidious) , king of the Kintyre peninsula . According to legend, Merlin the Bard took part in the battle on the side of Aeddam.
Airdrie's history is not documented by reliable sources until 1162 .
Between 1162 and 1850, the monks of Newbattle Abbey built the Airdries infrastructure. Initially only used as a traffic stop, settlements soon emerged.
