Newbattle Abbey is a former Cistercian abbey in Scotland . The monastery is in Midlothian , near the village of Newbattle .

history

The monastery was founded in 1140 by the Scottish King David I and was a subsidiary of Melrose Abbey , which in turn was a subsidiary of Clairvaux Primary Abbey . The church was consecrated in 1234. The abbey was set on fire by Royal English troops in 1385 and 1544. In 1587 it was converted into a secular manor of the last Commendatar Abbot Mark Kerr. Remains of the abbey buildings have been preserved in the basement of the manor house.
