P. Leopold Janauschek

Life

Janauschek graduated from high school in 1846 and joined Zwettl Abbey in the same year . After studying at Heiligenkreuz Abbey , he was ordained a priest in 1851 . From 1853 to 1877 he taught church history and canon law at the Institutum Theologicum in Heiligenkreuz ; at the same time he studied at the University of Vienna from 1856 to 1859 . There he supplemented the chair for church history in 1858/59, but was designated by his superiors for teaching within the order. His name has a primacy in the field of the history of the order. 1876 awarded him the University of Tübingen , the honorary doctorate . In 1877 his life's work, the Origines Cistercienses, appeared . For this and because of his universally recognized erudition, the Cistercian General Chapter awarded him the title of Historiographus Ordinis in 1891 . Janauschek died on July 23, 1898 in Baden and was buried in Heiligenkreuz.

The serial number according to Janauschek

Wikipedia articles on Cistercian monasteries classically name the serial number after Janauschek . This number refers to the list of all male monasteries of the order as an indication of the chronological order of the foundation. According to Janauschek, for example, Bronnbach Abbey is the 326th monastery after the founding of number 1, the Cîteaux monastery .

Janauschek wanted to write a second volume about the women's monasteries of the order, but could not complete this work before his death.

Research has come to new discoveries in the last century and Janauschek does not represent the latest status. Even if a few details in his book are outdated, the Originum Cisterciensium Tomus Primus is largely reliable and is still one of the greatest works of the Cistercian exploration.
