history

In the 12th century, the Scottish King David I founded the Cistercian monastery Newbattle Abbey . The village was created in connection with this important abbey. In the 16th century, after the secularization of the abbey, a mansion of the same name was built on the site . As in the surrounding towns, there were both quarries and coal mines around Newbattle. There was also a paper mill and a brick factory. As part of the 1971 census, 681 inhabitants were counted in Newbattle.

traffic

The B703 runs through Newbattle and runs from Dalkeith to Newtongrange . A trunk road runs directly to the west with the A7 ( Edinburgh - Carlisle ). The Waverley Line , built in the 19th century, touches Newbattle and crosses the South Esk on the south edge on the imposing Lothianbridge Viaduct . The nearest train station was in Newtongrange. When the line was closed in the 1960s, it was abandoned. As part of the construction of the Borders Railway in the 2010s, the line was repaired and a new station opened in Newtongrange in September 2015. With the Edinburgh Airport is an international airport located about 18 km north-west.
