Joe Allen (painter)

Joe Allen (* 1955 in Airdrie , Scotland ) is a British painter .

Life

While attending secondary school, he received private lessons from the Scottish landscape painter CM Cameron and attended drawing courses at the Glasgow School of Art . After graduating from high school, he studied in London at the St. Martins School of Art and the Chamberwell School of Art, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts with Honors in Fine Art. He then completed his studies as a master class student at the Royal Academy School in London with a Master of Art Degree .

In 1983, in addition to working as a freelance painter, he began teaching , first at colleges in Newcastle and London, then at the Centro de Arte Verrochio near Siena . From 1984 to 2007 he taught as a lecturer at the European Art Academy in Trier , then also at the Thuringian Summer Academy in Böhlen . He lives in London and Trier.

Joe Allen moves with his pictures on the border between figurative and non-representational painting. He is looking for new forms of expression to portray the human condition without emulating fashionable trends. When he alternates the formats between very large (275 × 320 cm) and very small (18 × 24 cm) or experiments with the addition of organic materials to make the colored surfaces - often in different shades of gray and black - more dull and three-dimensional or to make it more transparent, then always in the interest of an artistic statement. Joe Allen is a “pictor doctus” in the classic sense: For him, painting is always a critical preoccupation with history, art history , politics or literature. So he has in various series a. a. dealt with the works of Diego Velasquez , John Constable or Harold Pinter .
