The Kunsthalle Darmstadt is an exhibition building in Darmstadt in the south of Hesse .
history
For the art association for the Grand Duchy of Hesse , which was founded in 1837, an architecture competition was announced, which Hermann Müller (1841-1934) won with a design in the neo-Renaissance style. The building was built in 1889 at the Rheintor and redesigned in 1909 by Friedrich Pützer . At the opening in 1889 u. a. shown the painting Shores of Oblivion . In 1944 the building was largely destroyed in an air raid and the portico was put into storage in the 1960s.
In 1955 a new architecture competition was announced, which Theo Pabst won. According to his plans, the new art hall was built in 1957 with two exhibition areas of 65 and 200 m². In 1986/1987 the art gallery was extended to the north according to the plans of the architect Hans-Henning Heinz . The demolished portico of the northern Rhine gate, which was already integrated into the building of the old art gallery, was rebuilt in front of the art gallery on Rheinstrasse. The portico today forms an inner courtyard with the adjoining boundaries of the forecourt, which is used as a sculpture garden.
