Barry Bannan (born December 1, 1989 in Airdrie ) is a Scottish football player who is currently under contract with the English club Sheffield Wednesday .

Career

Starts at Villa and on loan at Derby County

Barry Bannan is a product of the Aston Villa Youth Academy . He started in the 2007/08 season, where he scored a total of thirteen goals in 32 games, making the Youth Academy a Premier Academy League win. In ten games he also scored a goal for the reserve team, which won the Premier Reserve League South in 2007/08.

On July 1, 2008, he signed a two-year contract with Aston Villa . In November 2008 he was named “Young Player of the Month” by the local radio station “BBC West Midlands”. He was the first Villa player to win this award twice.

In the 1: 3 defeat against Hamburger SV , he made his debut in the professional team in the UEFA Cup group game on December 17 , when he was substituted on in the 61st minute. On February 26, 2009 he played his first game in the starting line-up again in the UEFA Cup in the round of 32 against CSKA Moscow , this game was also lost.

After only two appearances in the UEFA Cup , he was loaned out to Derby County for a month on March 13, 2009 after midfielders Miles Addison and Paul Green were injured and were out until the end of the season. However, the loan was extended until the end of the season. The following day, he scored his first goal in a 4-2 loss to Sheffield United in his debut.

After ten games and one goal, the loan ended at the end of the season. However, Bannan did not rule out a return to Derby County. He told Burton Mail in an interview that if Aston didn't plan with him, he wouldn't mind going back to this great club. That didn't happen at first, so he returned to Villa.

Five months back at Aston Villa and next loan period at Blackpool FC

As the Football League Championship ended earlier than the Premier League , Bannan returned before the Premier League season ended. During that time he played again for the reserve team in the "Premier Reserve League South". Aston Villa won it and played in the playoff against the champions of the Premier Reserve League North, AFC Sunderland . Bannan was part of the starting XI, Aston won 3-1 to win the Premier Reserve League .

In June 2009 Derby County manager Nigel Clough hoped to sign Bannan. However, he saw his future at Aston Villa and signed a new contract on July 4th.

At the Peace Cup 2009 he gained a lot of match practice with many other youngsters. Aston played in Group C, where they won the table against one of the hosts FC Málaga and the Mexican club CF Atlante . In the semifinals they won 2-1 against FC Porto . In the final, Villa secured the Cup, with a 4-3 win on penalties against top Italian club Juventus Turin after no goal was scored in regular time. Bannan was one of the six penalty takers and converted his sovereign.

On November 26th, he moved on loan to Blackpool FC , who played in the Football League Championship . The loan period was scheduled for January 30, 2010. Four days later he played his first game for his new club, the "West Lancashire Derby" against Preston North End , when he came on in the 87th minute.

On December 8th, he made his first appearance in the starting line-up against Middlesbrough FC . On January 28, 2010 and eight appearances for Blackpool, his loan period was extended to the end of the 2009/10 season. Two days later he scored his first goal in a 1-1 draw with Coventry City from a distance of 30 meters . On the night of their February 6 home defeat to Leicester City , he was caught in a nightclub with teammates Ishmel Demontagnac and Neal Eardley , although Bannan had a most likely broken toe, an investigation the next day should clarify. They were then removed from the squad by coach Ian Holloway for the next game against Sheffield Wednesday . After twenty league games by Bannan, Blackpool FC finished sixth in the table and qualified for the playoffs. After two wins in the playoff games, in which he also participated, they rose to the Premier League . He then returned to Aston Villa.

Breakthrough at Aston and further loan periods at Leeds United

After a good preparation for the 2010/11 season, he completed his first Premier League game on August 14, 2010 on the first day of the game when he was substituted on for Marc Albrighton against West Ham United in the 89th minute . Just five days later he scored his first goal for Villa in the Europa League qualifier against SK Rapid Wien .

On March 7, 2011, Bannan was loaned to Leeds United, which plays in the Football League Championship , for the rest of the season . His first game for the Whites came in a game against Preston North End when he was substituted on in the second half.

Switch to Crystal Palace

On September 2, 2013, Bannan moved to Crystal Palace for an undisclosed fee , where he signed a three-year contract. He was the dream player of coach Ian Holloway , who knew him from his time at Blackpool FC. On November 23, his debut goal for his new employer followed in a 1-0 win in the away game against Hull City . By the end of the season, Bannan had played 15 league games for Palace.

National team

Bannan plays for the Scottish U-21 national team , where he played five games as part of qualifying for the 2011 U-21 European Football Championship . On March 28, 2009, he made his debut in a 1-0 victory over Albania . After three more games, he played his last game on November 15, 2009 in a 4-0 victory over Azerbaijan at the Tofiq Bəhramov Stadium in Baku .

On May 6, 2009, B played his first and so far only B international match in a 3-0 victory over Northern Ireland .

On November 16, 2010, in a 3-0 win against the Faroe Islands , he played his first international match, even in the starting line-up.
