Samuel Thomas "Sam" Winnall (born January 19, 1991 in Wolverhampton ) is an English football player who has been under contract with the second division team Sheffield Wednesday since 2017 .

Career

Wolverhampton Wanderers

Sam Winnall, who came from his own youth academy, made his debut on August 24, 2010 for Wolverhampton Wanderers in a 2-1 home win in the second round of the 2010/11 League Cup over Southend United . In February 2011, the club loaned him to the fourth division club Burton Albion , for whom he scored seven goals in Football League Two 2010/11 . In the two subsequent seasons, further loans to Hereford United , Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Shrewsbury Town followed .

Scunthorpe United

After his contract with the Wolves had expired, the free transfer Winnall moved on July 29, 2013 to fourth division Scunthorpe United . The attacker scored 23 league goals for his new team, making it the top scorer in the English fourth division . Scunthorpe also reached the direct return to the third division as runner-up in the Football League Two 2013/14 .

Barnsley FC

On July 23, 2014, third division FC Barnsley announced the signing of the 23-year-old and gave him a three-year contract. For the second division relegated to the Football League One 2014/15 only finished eleventh in the table, Winnall achieved nine league goals. The 2015/16 season was much more successful for the striker and his team. Sam Winnall scored 21 league goals and moved into the play-offs with his team as sixth in the table. After a clear semi-final victory over FC Walsall (3: 0 and 3: 1), FC Barnsley defeated FC Millwall 3: 1 in the final and thus secured promotion to the second division. In the EFL Championship 2016/17 , Sam Winnall was able to maintain his accuracy and score eleven league goals in the first half of the season. In December 2016 he was named Player of the Month for the EFL Championship .

Sheffield Wednesday

Since his contract would have expired in the summer of 2017, Barnsley FC decided in January 2017 to sell its best attacker to league rivals Sheffield Wednesday . With his new team he moved into the play-offs as fourth in the table, but failed there prematurely at the later promoted Huddersfield Town .

End of August 2017 was Sam Winnall in exchange for Jacob Butterfield for the rest of the season 2017/18 to the league rivals Derby County on loan. He scored six goals in 17 league appearances before a cruciate ligament rupture in early February 2018 meant his season was over. A permanent transfer did not materialize, also because derby coach Gary Rowett left the club at the end of the season.
