Gary Rowett (born March 6, 1974 in Bromsgrove ) is a former English football player and current coach . The defender made a total of 136 appearances (5 goals) in the Premier League for Everton , Derby County , Leicester City and Charlton Athletic .

Player career

Gary Rowett started his playing career at the English second division club Cambridge United . With the new league he reached the play-offs in the Football League Second Division in 1991/92 as fifth , but failed there prematurely at Leicester City . In the following season he rose with his team as the table penultimate in the third division. In March 1994 Rowett moved to Everton FC , however, could not prevail at the first division and moved to a temporary loan deal to the third division Blackpool FC , in the summer of 1995 to Derby County . In his first season in Derby , he rose with his new team as second in the English first division. In the following two seasons he was able to establish himself with his team in the top English league before moving to Birmingham City in August 1998 . With the team from Birmingham he missed promotion to the Premier League in the play-offs in each of the following two years and therefore signed a contract with the first division club Leicester City in July 2000. After a thirteenth place in the Premier League 2000/01 , he rose with Leicester 2001/02 as bottom of the table in the second division. Rowett then moved to Charlton Athletic , but completed only thirteen league games in two years due to injury for the first division. Gary Rowett experienced the end of his playing career with the fifth division club Burton Albion .

Coaching career

Burton Albion

After initially working as an assistant coach for Burton Albion since May 2009 , Rowett took over the interim position of head coach at the fourth division in March 2012. On May 10, 2012, he received the association's trust on a fixed contract basis. In his first season as head coach, he led his team as fourth in the 2012/13 Football League Two in the play-offs, but failed there prematurely at Bradford City . The 2013/14 season ended Burton Albion as sixth in the table and moved into the play-off final after a success over Southend United . There, however, Rowett's team lost 1-0 to Fleetwood Town and thus missed promotion to the third division.

Birmingham City

On October 27, 2014 Gary Rowett left Burton Albion and took over the coaching post at relegation-threatened second division Birmingham City . Rowett led the club in the course of the Football League Championship 2014/15 as table tenth in the secured middle of the table. In the Football League Championship 2015/16 he also led his team to a good tenth place in the table. On December 14, 2016, the association surprisingly announced the dismissal of Rowett under the new owner. Birmingham City was at this point in seventh place in the table and crashed under the successor Gianfranco Zola in the relegation region.

Derby County

On March 14, 2017, the ambitious second division Derby County announced the signing of Gary Rowett as their new head coach. Rowett finished the 2016/17 EFL Championship as ninth in the table after the team had already missed promotion to the Premier League under their predecessor Steve McClaren . In the 2017/18 season he led Derby County as sixth in the promotion play-offs, where the team was defeated by Fulham FC in the semifinals .

Stoke City

At the end of the season, Rowett asked Derby's management to start negotiations with the Premier League relegated Stoke City . On May 22, 2018, Stoke announced that Rowett would take over as coach of the club for the 2018/19 season. According to press reports, Stoke is paying Derby County a transfer fee of around £ 2 million. Rowett was released at the beginning of January 2019, with only eight wins from 26 league games in 14th place in the table, the targeted direct promotion became increasingly unlikely.

Millwall FC

In October 2019 he was introduced to the second division club Millwall FC as the successor to the resigned Neil Harris .
