Burton Albion (officially: Burton Albion Football Club ) is an English football club from Burton upon Trent . The club is currently playing in the third- tier EFL League One .

history

The Burton Albion Football Club was founded in 1950 and entered the Birmingham & District League . The players of the club are also Brewers (to German brewer called), as this is one of the most important economic sectors of the city. After numerous promotions and relegations in lower class leagues, Burton Albion played from the 2002 season in the Conference National . In the third round of the FA Cup 2005/06 they came against Manchester United on January 8, 2006 to a remarkable 0-0 in the home arena. In the subsequent replay in Manchester, Burton was clearly defeated 5-0, but the 11,000 Brewer fans who traveled with them set a new record at Old Trafford .

The former England international Nigel Clough had already been working as a player-coach for the club since 1998 and has played a key role in the successes in recent history. In January 2009, however, he left the club for Derby County and became the manager of the second division club. As a successor, Burton Albion presented another former England international, Roy McFarland , who, however, only held the post until the end of the season and was supposed to secure promotion.

After the successful promotion to Football League Two , the former Canadian international Paul Peschisolido was introduced as the new head coach for the 2009/10 season . With the Canadian, Burton reached a respectable 13th place in the table in the secured midfield in his first professional season. After 14 consecutive games without a win, Peschisolido was released in March 2012 and his previous assistant Gary Rowett was appointed as the new coach.

In the 2018/19 season, Burton Albion reached the semi-finals of the League Cup after beating Shrewsbury Town , Aston Villa , Burnley , Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough .
