Accrington Stanley (officially: Accrington Stanley Football Club ) - also known as The Stans , Stanley , The (Famous) Minnows and The Owd Reds - is an English football club from Accrington , who since the season 2018/19 in the EFL League One , the third highest English division, is active.
history
In October 1968, the city library was re-established after the previous club of the same name had been dissolved in 1966. In August 1970 a new venue, the Crown Ground (today: Wham Stadium ), opened. In 1995 the club was taken over by Eric Whalley , a local businessman, and the stadium was renamed Fraser Eagle Stadium. Since 2009 it has been called the Crown Ground again.
In 2003 the Nationwide Conference , the top division outside of the league system, was reached. This soaring flight was mainly due to the change of a former star player from Accrington Stanley: When buying Brett Ormerod in 1997, Blackpool FC agreed that Accrington would receive a quarter of the transfer fee the next time he changed the player. When he went to Southampton FC in December 2001 , they received over a million pounds.
In the 2005/06 season Accrington won the championship in the Nationwide Conference and thus made promotion to the Football League .
