history

Portsmouth's arch-rivals are Southampton FC , just 30 kilometers away , although Southampton was mostly in the higher division during the 1980s and 1990s. This derby became relevant again with Portsmouth's promotion to the Premier League in 2003.

The biggest success of the recent past was the promotion to the Premier League, which was sealed on April 27, 2003 by a 3-2 win against Rotherham United . The 2008-09 season was the sixth consecutive season in the Premier League. The highlight of the 2007/08 season was the final of the FA Cup , in which they met the second division Cardiff City and won 1-0.

On July 13, 2009, the club was officially bought by the Arab entrepreneur Sulaiman al-Fahim , who had already arranged the takeover of league rival Manchester City by an investment company from the Abu Dhabi sheikdom. Due to financial problems, al-Fahim later sold 90% of the shares to the Saudi entrepreneur Ali al-Faraj, but another change of ownership followed a short time later. The club was later taken over by the Chinese entrepreneur Balram Chainrai. Nevertheless, the sporty decline could not be ended.

In 2010, the club's financial situation worsened. Due to tax debts in the amount of 13.2 million euros, the club applied to the management of the Premier League on February 18, 2010, to be allowed to sell players outside the transfer period in order to prevent the impending bankruptcy and subsequent liquidation. The Premier League banned this two days later. On February 25, 2010 Portsmouth FC became the first club in the history of the Premier League to file for bankruptcy. As a result, the southern English club was penalized with a deduction of nine points. After the table neighbors West Ham United won against Sunderland on the 34th matchday , the relegation was mathematically certain. With reaching the FA Cup final against Chelsea , a success could still be recorded. The final took place on May 15, 2010 at London's Wembley Stadium and ended 1-0 for Chelsea.

On May 20, 2010 it was announced that the previous coach Avram Grant will leave the club.

The 2011/12 season finished 22nd, including a ten point deduction due to financial irregularities. The relegation to the third-rate EFL League One was thus certain.

On April 19, 2013 it was announced that the Portsmouth Supporters Trust has taken over the club. At the same time, the Football League announced that on April 22, 2013, the existing forced administration will be lifted.

On August 3, 2017, the club announced that the former Disney boss Michael Eisner is the new 100% owner of Portsmouth FC.

basketball

In 1985 the then chairman of Portsmouth FC, John Deacon , bought himself into the basketball team Turbos from Telford as owner , after he took over the Solent Stars from Southampton , which had previously been the regular season and the play-offs in the top division “National Basketball League (NBL) 'Division One had won, hadn't succeeded. The Turbos were overwhelmed by being promoted to the top division "National Basketball League" (NBL) Division One in the 1984/85 season, achieved only one win of the season and ranked with the same point and chronically unsuccessful team from Bolton in the last two places in the table. Deacon transferred the Turbos as Portsmouth FC basketball team to Portsmouth and signed well-known players, including Alan Cunningham of the Worthing Bears and Colin Irish of Manchester United for the following season. With the new staff, they were already considered favorites in the 1985/86 season, but at the end of the season had to be satisfied with third place in the league behind defending champions Kingston Kings and the new champions Manchester United.

In the following season, the team gambled away in the Korać Cup 1986/87 in the first round a 20-point lead from the first leg against KK Šibenka Šibenik in the second leg in Yugoslavia . The national cup final in the National Cup was lost to defending champion Kingston Kings, but just under two months later they won the second round match against the Kings with 18 points difference. This was worth gold at the end of the season, because with three defeats each season both teams were tied and Portsmouth FC were champions by direct comparison. In the additional play-offs played, they lost again in the semifinals against the Kings, who, however, lost the play-off final against Crystal Palace .

In the 1987/88 season the Division One formed together with the Scottish team Murray BC Livingston the closed professional league British Basketball League (BBL), in which Portsmouth was the first master of the "Regular Season" with only two defeats this season. In the 1987/88 European Cup , you could not make up for an 18-point defeat in the first leg against the Czechoslovak team from Brno in the second leg and were eliminated in the first round. The cup final in the National Cup was lost again against the Kingston Kings. In the play-offs of the BBL, the team was then able to prevail against regional rivals Solent Stars Southampton and moved to a win over Manchester United in the play-off final against Murray BC, which was lost by nine points after they had already lost the final in the League Cup BBL Trophy against this team . While David E. Murray , the owner of Murray BC and chairman of the Glasgow Rangers since 1987 , now took over the Kingston Kings and transferred it to Scotland as Glasgow Rangers BC , Deacon sold his stake in Portsmouth FC, originally announced the intention of the basketball franchise Transfer to Reading was not carried out and Portsmouth, along with three other teams, was de-registered from the BBL after one season.
