Ipswich Town (officially Ipswich Town Football Club ) - also known as The Blues , Town or The Tractor Boys - is an English football club from Ipswich , founded in 1878 and currently playing in the third-rate EFL League One .

Club history

Championship title and beginning of the era of Bobby Robson (1961–1977)

In the First Division 1961/62 Ipswich won the championship title under the later English national coach Alf Ramsey . What was remarkable was that it was the first premier league season ever for the club, which was actually considered a certain relegation. The team secured the title before Burnley FC and reigning champions Tottenham Hotspur . The top goalscorer was Ted Phillips , who scored 28 goals in 40 league games. In the 1962/63 European Cup , the team prevailed in the preliminary round with 4-1 and 10-0 against the Maltese champions FC Floriana , but failed in the first round against the Italian champions AC Milan . Only two years after the championship title followed the descent from the First Division as bottom of the table . After four years in the Second Division , the club returned to the First Division in 1968 and should hold this division for the next 18 years. The first years in the top English division Ipswich was busy fighting relegation, before coach Bobby Robson led the team to third place in the 1972/73 season . This led to their first participation in the 1973/74 UEFA Cup . Ipswich defeated the Spanish record champions Real Madrid in the first round and was able to eliminate Lazio Rome and Twente Enschede in the next two rounds , before the end of the quarter-finals against 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig . The club was also successful in the championship in 1973/74 and qualified for the 1974/75 UEFA Cup by finishing fourth . The renewed trip to the European Cup ended in the first round against Twente Enschede. But Bobby Robson's team continued their success story in the First Division 1974/75 and was third in the table, only two points behind champions Derby County . After a first-round win over Feyenoord Rotterdam , this time they were eliminated in the second round of the UEFA Cup against Club Bruges . Two years later, Ipswich Town qualified third in the First Division in 1976/77 for the fourth time in just a few years for the 1977/78 UEFA Cup . The end followed in the third round after a penalty shoot-out against FC Barcelona .

The 1977/78 season led to a fall in the league to 18th place and a barely achieved relegation, but coach Bobby Robson led the team around Paul Cooper , Mick Mills , George Burley , John Wark and Paul Mariner to triumph in the FA Cup . The decisive goal in the 1-0 final in front of 100,000 spectators at Wembley was scored by Roger Osborne . By winning the FA Cup Ipswich started for the first time in the European Cup Winners' Cup 1978/79 and moved into the quarter-finals. As in last year's UEFA Cup, the opponent there was FC Barcelona around Johan Neeskens and Hans Krankl , who again narrowly prevailed and later won the title. In the 1978/79 season, the club was again more successful in the championship and reached sixth place in the UEFA Cup 1979/80 , but failed there in the second round. By the third place 1979/80 Ipswich Town took part again in the UEFA Cup . After several attempts, the team, still trained by successful coach Bobby Robson, managed to triumph in the 1980/81 UEFA Cup . After 1. FC Köln had been defeated 1-0 twice in the semi-finals , Terry Butcher , Frans Thijssen and Arnold Mühren's team won the final 3-0 and 2-4 against Dutch representatives AZ Alkmaar . The 1980/81 season led in the league to runner-up behind Aston Villa and thus the best placement since the championship title in 1962. The final stop in the 1981/82 UEFA Cup was in the first round against FC Aberdeen . The success story continued in the Football League First Division 1981/82 with the renewed runner-up title behind the champions FC Liverpool . Bobby Robson, who has now become a legend in its own right, ended his coaching work at Ipswich and became the coach of the English national team . The team also failed in the first round of the 1982/83 UEFA Cup , and since it was only ninth in the championship, the 1983/84 season only took place for the second time in the last ten years without participating in the European Cup.

End of the Robson era and relegation to the Second Division (1983-2000)

After two mixed seasons, the club rose in the 1985/86 season as third from bottom for the first time in 18 years from the second division. Only after six years in the second division managed the team under coach John Lyall to return to the first division. Participation in the first season of the newly introduced Premier League 1992/93 led Ipswich to 15th place in the table and thus relegation. After a very close relegation in the Premier League 1993/94 with only one point ahead of relegated Sheffield United , followed in the Premier League 1994/95 under coach George Burley the return to the second division after three years of first class. Burley, who was also a player for the club from 1973 to 1985, then remained a coach and only returned to the Premier League five years later .

Return to the Premier League and relegation again (2000-)

The fourth season in the Premier League led to the best result so far. The team around Richard Wright , Matt Holland and Titus Bramble finished sixth in the 2000/01 table and qualified for the European Cup for the first time since 1983. Marcus Stewart scored 19 league goals, securing himself second place on the top scorer list behind Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink (23 goals for Chelsea ). In the 2001/02 UEFA Cup Ipswich Town reached the third round, but failed there 1-0 and 1: 4 at the top Italian club Inter Milan . This good previous year's level could not keep the team in the Premier League 2001/02 and rose as third from bottom in the second division. Ipswich took part in the qualification for the UEFA Cup via the fair play rating and made it into the main round of the 2002/03 UEFA Cup . There the club failed in the second round after penalty shoot-out to Slovan Liberec .

Since 2002 the club has been playing in the second division, which was renamed the Football League Championship in 2004.

Stadion

The home stadium is Portman Road with a seating capacity of 30,311 (all seats). Portman Road was the first English football stadium to have seats only (since 1993) (due to the Hillsborough stadium disaster , Sheffield ). The record visit before the renovation came about with 38,010 on March 8, 1975 in the FA Cup against Leeds United .

rivalry

One of the most pronounced rivalries in English football is between Ipswich and Norwich City . The win in the East Anglian derby is therefore considered particularly prestigious.

Trivia

Ipswich claims to have been one of the first clubs to use goal nets around 1890. With Alf Ramsey and Bobby Robson , Ipswich Town is the only club that has two English national coaches.

Since 2006 there has been a strong friendship between fans of Fortuna Düsseldorf and Ipswich. Fortuna fans regularly travel to Ipswich (or to away games) to watch the "Tractor Boys" games on site. Conversely, supporters from Ipswich use a visit to Düsseldorf to symbolize the mutual friendship between both clubs.
