Terence Ian "Terry" Butcher (born December 28, 1958 in Singapore ) is an English football coach and former football player.
Life
The 1.92 m tall central defender Butcher was not famous for his footballing prowess, but he was still one of England's most solid defenders. He began his professional career in 1978 at Ipswich Town and reached the quarter-finals of the European Cup Winners' Cup with the club in the first year , which they lost to FC Barcelona . In 1981 he won the UEFA Cup with Ipswich against the Dutch representative AZ Alkmaar . On the way to the final, Ipswich defeated 1. FC Köln in the semi-finals. A year later he took the English national football team at the World Cup Football 1982 in part in Spain.
After participating in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico , where England were eliminated in the quarter-finals, Butcher moved from Ipswich to Scotland to the Glasgow Rangers . After not taking part in the European Football Championship in Germany in 1988, he returned to the English national team. He took part in the qualifying games for the 1990 World Cup in Italy . His appearance in the decisive qualifying game against Sweden in Sweden was legendary , when he was able to hold out the whole game with an extremely bleeding laceration and a blood-soaked shirt due to his fighter nature and also offered a terrific performance. In spite of the injury, he wasn't too good to attack every header. England finished fourth at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, the best result since the 1966 World Cup . Overall, Butcher took part in 77 international matches from 1980 to 1990, in which he scored three goals. He was captain of the national team in seven games.
He ended his career in the 1992/93 season at Sunderland . Today he is the full-time coach of the Scottish Premier League Club Inverness Caledonian Thistle . Before that, he had coached Motherwell FC and Sydney FC in Australia for several years and was assistant to the Scottish national team.
