The Sydney FC is an Australian football club from Sydney . The club, founded in 2004, is privately owned.
Sydney FC will temporarily play their home games at the Netstrata Jubilee Stadium until 2022 until their new venue is completed.
On June 11, 2005, Sydney FC won the OFC Champions Cup and qualified as a representative of the Oceania Football Confederation for the FIFA Club World Cup 2005 in Japan. On March 5, 2006, the club won with a 1-0 final victory over the Central Coast Mariners, the first championship title in the newly formed Australian A-League under the direction of German coach Pierre Littbarski .
history
In early 2004, the Australian Football Association ASA (today: FFA ) began planning an Australian football professional league ( A-League ). Then Soccer New South Wales (today: Football NSW ) advertised a license for a team from Sydney. One of the applicants for the license was Sydney FC, which was formed for the application in April 2004. On November first of the same year, Sydney FC was officially proclaimed a founding member of the A-League by Football NSW. In February the squad already consisted of 16 players out of the maximum allowed 20. Among these players were national players such as Clint Bolton, Steve Corica and David Zdrilic. The former Manchester United player Dwight Yorke was signed as a marquee player . In the very first season, Sydney won the A-League with a 1-0 win over the Central Coast Mariners .
Littbarski's successor Terry Butcher was replaced by Branko Culina in February 2007 after a disappointing season . He led Sydney FC initially with only moderate success, the club was eliminated in the group stage through the games of the Asian Champions League and was already 60-fold at the end of October 2007, after only two wins in nine league games, by John Kosmina Australian international, who last worked for Adelaide United , replaced.
On September 5, 2012, the club signed the Italian world champion from 2006 Alessandro Del Piero , who received a two-year contract.
Stadion
Until mid-2018, Sydney FC played their home games at Allianz Stadium , originally called Sydney Football Stadium and now called Aussie Stadium . The club chose this location as the venue because of the good transport links. On match days, shuttle buses carried fans from the main train station to the stadium. In 2018 it was decided to replace the stadium with a new building. The new stadium should be ready by 2022 at the latest. Until then, Sydney FC will play their home games in the suburb of Carlton at the Netstrata Jubilee Stadium.

Fans
In the first A-League season, the average attendance at home games of Sydney FC was 19,647 (without the final round 16,668, which at that time was a record for a club in the Australian league).
The loudest fans stand in the north curve of the Aussie Stadium and are known as "The Cove". This name of the fans "The Cove" is derived from the original name of the Sydney settlement , Sydney Cove . The Circular Quay Ferry Terminal is now located on this original settlement . Most of the members of the Cove attend every home game, but only a small group of these fans travel to the away games to support the team there.
On July 7th, Jimmy Barnes , an Australian rock singer, recorded the club anthem "Sydney FC For Me" with 25 members of the Cove who formed the background choir. This was published before the start of the 2006/07 season .
