Sydney Cove is a small bay in Port Jackson in the Australian metropolis of Sydney .

Sydney Cove is home to the Sydney Opera House , the southern driveway to the Sydney Harbor Bridge and two landing stages for ferries. From Circular Quay these connect downtown Sydney with the outskirts. Passenger ships moor at a cruise terminal.

history

In 1770, James Cook explored the area on his first voyage to the South Seas. On January 26, 1788, now celebrated as Australia Day , a British fleet ( First Fleet ) under Captain Arthur Phillip arrived in Sydney Cove, where a first settlement was built.

The British had originally planned to settle in Botany Bay , which was discovered by James Cook, but rejected this plan because of the lack of water. Then they followed the coast north, where they first discovered Manly Bay and then Sydney Cove. The new settlement was named Sydney, in honor of Lord Sydney, the then British Interior Minister .
