The Sydney Cove is an open bay of the island Heard in the archipelago of Heard Island and McDonald Islands in the southern Indian Ocean . It is located immediately southeast of Red Island on the north side of the Laurens Peninsula .
The bay can be found for the first time under the name Shanghai Bay on the map of the US seal catcher captain HC Chester from 1860 . Scientists from the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions surveyed and renamed the site in 1948. The new namesake is the Australian city of Sydney .
