Alexander John Kosmina (born August 17, 1956 in Adelaide ) is a former Australian football player and coach of the Australian A-League club Sydney FC until January 2009 . He was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Football Federation Australia .
Player career
Kosmina began his career in 1973 with Polonia Adelaide, where he played until 1976. He then moved to West Adelaide and Adelaide City before signing a contract with Arsenal FC in London in February 1978 . After only one first-team appearance in a year, he returned to Australia in May 1979. With positions at West Adelaide SC, Sydney City SC, Sydney Olympic, APIA Leichhardt and Sutherland Sharks, he became one of the most successful goal scorers in the National Soccer League. With Sidney City he was able to win the championship in 1981 and 1982, in 1982 he was also top scorer. He ended his active career in 1989.
After the active time
After his playing days, he first coached the Manly-Warringah Dolphins before he was coach of the Newcastle Breakers in 1995 . In 1999 he finally moved to the Brisbane Strikers , but here too, as with the Breakers, there were no major successes.
Adelaide United
In 2003 he finally took over the team from Adelaide United and was able to achieve a third place there in the 2003/04 season. After the dissolution of the National Soccer League , he continued his job in the newly founded Hyundai A-League . United came out there in the first season as the best team from the regular season , but did not come in the playoffs again over a third place. In the 2005/2006 season Kosmina United led to the final, but lost 6-0 to Melbourne Victory . After the game he had a scuffle with Kevin Muscat and was then relegated to the stands for five games for the coming season. Kosmina, who complained about the referee's performance after the game, was sharply criticized for the poor performance of his team and finally gave up his post as coach. With this step he ended the speculation about his early release.
For the 2007 Asian Cup , head coach Graham Arnold brought him as his assistant.
Sydney FC
After Branko Culina was fired from Sydney FC on October 22, 2007, Kosmina was introduced as the new coach two days later. He took over the team in sixth place and led the team to third place in the regular season. In the finals, however, they were already defeated in the minor semifinal Queensland Roar with 0: 2 in addition. After an overall disappointing 2008/2009 season and a 5th place, with which you missed the finals, Kosmina was released on January 30th and replaced two days later by the Czech Vitezslav Lavicka .
