The Adelaide United FC is a football club from the Australian city of Adelaide . The club was founded in 2003 and plays in the A-League , the Australian professional league.
history
In August 2003, the Adelaide City club withdrew from the National Soccer League (NSL), the top division at the time. The city of Adelaide was without an NSL team for the first time since the league was founded in 1977. A month later, the Adelaide United Football Club was founded. Within a few weeks, the club put together a team that could take part in the NSL. After the 2003/04 season, the NSL stopped playing.
The club was one of the eight founding members of the A-League . In addition to Perth Glory and the Newcastle United Jets , Adelaide United is one of the three NSL clubs that were accepted into the A-League. When putting together the squad, the focus was mainly on players from Adelaide and the surrounding area. In the autumn of 2006, the club signed the Brazilian ex-star Romário for four games. At the end of the 2006/07 season Adelaide United reached the Grand Final and lost to Melbourne Victory 6-0.
Disparaging remarks about the refereeing team led by FIFA referee Mark Shield at the Grand Final led to the replacement of captain Ross Aloisi and the resignation of coach John Kosmina. The assistant coach and former Australian international Aurelio Vidmar was appointed as his successor on an interim basis.
Adelaide United took part in the AFC Champions League in 2007 and 2008 and became the first Australian team to reach the final in 2008. There they were defeated by the Japanese representative Gamba Osaka 3-0 and 2-0, but still qualified for the FIFA Club World Cup 2008 , as Osaka occupied the place for the Japanese participating team. Adelaide United cooperates with the US second division club Fort Lauderdale Strikers .
Stadion
Adelaide United play their home games at Hindmarsh Stadium . The stadium offers 15,500 seats. At some games, a further 1,000 standing places could be offered by filling open spaces. The stadium is one of the best and most comfortable football stadiums in Australia. Since it is also the smallest in the A-League, the government of South Australia has offered the club expansion plans if the average attendance is consistently above 14,000. These plans envisage expanding the back straight to the size of the main grandstand, so that the capacity would increase to around 22,000 seats. In the following seasons, the average attendance was between 10,000 and 12,000.
