The FFA Cup 2014 was the first edition of the FFA Cup , the national Australian men's soccer cup competition. A total of 631 soccer teams took part in the competition. 32 teams reached the main round, including the ten A-League clubs and 22 lower-class clubs that prevailed in the regional qualifying rounds. Adelaide United won the first-ever home stadium with a 1-0 win over Perth Glory .
Qualifying rounds
621 teams competed in the various regional preliminaries in order to qualify for one of the 22 main round places to be awarded, the ten teams of the A-League ( Adelaide United , Brisbane Roar , Central Coast Mariners , Melbourne City FC , Melbourne Victory , Newcastle United Jets , Perth Glory , Sydney FC , Wellington Phoenix , Western Sydney Wanderers ) were seeded for the main round. Eight of the nine regional associations of the Australian Football Association held qualifying rounds, only teams from the Northern Territory did not participate in the first edition. The number of player registrations was used to distribute the qualification places per regional association, which led to the following distribution:
Regional association | Starting places | Qualifiers (league level) |
---|---|---|
New South Wales | 7th | Blacktown City FC (II), Hakoah Sydney City East (IV), Manly United (II), Parramatta FC (III), South Coast Wolves (II), Sydney Olympic (II), Sydney United (II) |
Queensland | 4th | Brisbane Strikers (II), Olympic FC (II), Far North Queensland FC (II), Palm Beach SC (II) |
Victoria | 4th | Melbourne Knights (II), South Springvale (IV), St Albans Saints (III), Bentleigh Greens (II) |
Northern New South Wales | 2 | Broadmeadow Magic (II), South Cardiff (II) |
Western Australia | 2 | Stirling Lions (II), Bayswater City SC (II) |
Australian Capital Territory | 1 | Tuggeranong United (II) |
South Australia | 1 | Adelaide City (II) |
Tasmania | 1 | South Hobart (II) |
Most regional associations used existing cup competitions to allocate the qualification places. ACT sent the winner of the 2013 Federation Cup , New South Wales used the Waratah Cup , South Australia let its participants play through the FFSA Federation Cup 2014 , Tasmania made use of the Lakoseljac Cup , in Victoria the Dockerty Cup served as a qualifying tournament and in Western Australia the teams qualified via the Football West State Cup .
Queensland launched the Football Queensland Cup as a qualifying tournament , which ended with the four qualifiers being determined, and qualifying games were also held in Northern New South Wales especially for the FFA Cup.
Raffles
In all draws from the first main round to the semi-finals, the teams were drawn to predefined places. In round 1, the four best teams of the past A-League season were drawn in away games against four lower-class teams, the other six A-League teams were drawn in direct duels. Due to the predefined seeding list in the following rounds, it was already clear in advance that at least nine lower-class teams would qualify for the second round, at least three for the quarter-finals and at least one for the semi-finals. The Australian Association justified this regulation with the fact that the associated possibility of cup surprises should be given in all rounds.
Lower-class teams generally had home rights against A-League teams; in addition, the New Zealand A-League participant Wellington Phoenix had to play away regardless of the draws.
1st main round
The 1st main round took place between July 29 and August 20, 2014. The matches were drawn on July 27th. The former national players Paul Okon and Mile Sterjovski played the following games: The defeat of the Western Sydney Wanderers was the only one of an A-League club against a sub-class competitor in the entire competition.

final
The final was originally supposed to take place on the national holiday ( Australia Day ), January 26th, but was brought forward because of the 2015 Asian Football Championship, which will also take place in Australia in January 2015 . The decision of the Australian Association to host the final in Adelaide sparked criticism from those responsible at Perth Glory. The Mark Viduka Medal for the best player of the final went to the goalscorer Cirio.
